Game Preview: Adirondack Phantoms at Rochester Americans

Tonight marks the third of four meetings between the Adirondack Phantoms (Philadelphia Flyers) and the Rochester Americans. I thought it would be a nice change of pace to think about the game before it happens. Especially considering that we really do not know which Amerks team we will be seeing tonight. Will we see the team that beat the Hershey Bears (Washington Capitals) by a score of 5-2 on Wednesday? Or shall we see the team that took a 2-0 lead into the second period and lost 7-3 to the Hamilton Bulldogs on Sunday? Hopefully it will be the former. Nevertheless, allow me to take a look at some of the numbers coming into tonight’s game.

Season Series:

The Amerks are 0-2-0-0 against the Phantoms this season; having lost both at home and on the road. They have also been outscored by a total of 6-3, with the Phantoms winning the first meeting 3-1 and the second 3-2.

Current Positions:

The Phantoms currently sit 6 points behind the 8th place Worcester Sharks (Really?) and 6 points above the bottom dwelling Binghamton Senators (Really?). The Syracuse Crunch (Anaheim Ducks) are but 1 point back from the 13th place Phantoms. The Amerks, however, sit in 10th place in the Western Conference and are but 2 points behind the 8th place San Antonio Rampage (Florida Panthers). They also sit 9 points ahead of the last place Rockford IceHogs (Chicago Blackhawks). The Milwaukee Admirals (Nashville Predators) are 2 points behind the Amerks. I know it is not really a fair comparison because the Eastern Conference is tougher than the Western Conference, but the Amerks could use a win against a team that is not likely to make the playoffs.

Power Play:

The Phantoms’ power play numbers:

  • Overall: 15th in AHL at 18%
  • Road: 20th in AHL at 16.8%

The Amerks’ power play numbers:

  • Overall: 24th in AHL at 15.1%
  • Home: 11th (!!) in the AHL at 19.2%

Penalty Kill:

The Phantoms’ penalty kill numbers:

  • Overall: 21st in AHL at 80.8%
  • Road: 24th in AHL at 78.4%

The Amerks’ penalty kill numbers:

  • Overall: 28th in AHL at 78.5%
  • Home: 23rd in AHL at 80.3%

Final Thoughts:

Tonight should be an interesting game between these two teams. The Amerks are trying to into the playoffs, and the Phantoms would certainly like to take the two points to try and make some headway in the Eastern Conference playoff race. The Phantoms are 3-6-1-0 over their last 10 games, so they will certainly be looking to pick up a win just for team morale. The Amerks are 5-4-1-0 over their last 10, and they desperately need a win tonight as they play the 8th place Lake Erie Monsters (Colorado Avalanche) on Saturday.
